Zoram was Nephi's friend from the beginning and it stayed consistently. As keeper of the record he had an appreciation for the scriptures, Nephi and Lehi loved the word of God...making them fast friends. This love for the word of God may have made him more sensitive to the fact that Nephi and Lehi were true prophets of God who were writing of their dealings with God and in that way adding to scripture.
He was given the opportunity to stay near the plates when Nephi made his promise back in Jerusalem. It is easily clear he would want to stay with Nephi to be near where the scriptures were and where the new prophet would be.
