Lehi references the armor of righteousness, with no other details. Was this idea available through the scriptures they had? I don't see references to the armor of God in the old testament. Since he doesn't explain it further I make a subtle assumption that he knew we would have other scripture and would know what that meant.
In further reading there are other similar references that should be considered in connection with this one. There is a reference to Armour of Light. In other places righteousness is likened to a rob or fine linens. Not exactly sure what the tire might be between robes/linens and armor.
Unless there is a significant tie to temple clothing...
In the fight against Satan we can protect ourselves by carefully obtaining and maintaining the armor of righteousness. When we do this we can appear before the Lord dressed in the robes of righteousness, like temple clothing, and not feel out of place.
