The law was engraven upon the plates of Brass. Nephi knew this and that Laban had his 'families'' copy of the law. The Lord told him and his father that this copy of the law needed to stay with their family as the were taken away from the people of Jerusalem. The verse that is referenced here with the word 'law' is that of Josh 1:8. This verse talks about meditating upon the word day and night that we may know how to 'do' the things that the Lord would have us do and with it we should prosper and have success.
