1 Nephi 14:16-18 "law" "sword"

I know we have reviewed the word 'law' already but having the law as contained on the plates of Brass, which was the law of Moses, was absolutely critical to Nephi and to his family. He knew it was critical because he had been taught these principles by the spirit.  The reference as I mentioned in my previous post was to Joshua 1:8 and that verse discusses meditating on the word day and night.  It seems so relevant to have frequent interactions with the scriptures so as to have their influence all the time.  This will help us to avoid spiritual drift.

The cross-reference for 'sword' was to Samuel 17:51 where David cuts off Goliath's head.  I have to assume that Nephi knew well the scriptures before the Brass plates were in his possession.  Did they have a copy of the scriptures in form of paper?  They knew they needed them in a form that they would not be 'perishable', but as well to do people who loved the lord, and as one of the Lord's prophets Lehi must have had a copy in some form to study from.  Knowing the scriptures may have helped guide him to know the most appropriate way to kill Laban -- to do it just as David did and cut off his head.  In both stories further reference is made to the armor.  David put it in his tent and Nephi donned Labans to  go and get the plates from Zoram.

Are we ready to be obedient to the Spirit when he asks us to do something hard.  We cannot be ready unless we are good at heeding his promptings now. My guess is that the better we get at heading the promptings the more extreme become the requests and opportunities place before us.  I don't think at this time that the Lord would trust me enough to ask me to do the same kinds of things that are asked of President Monson.  I've read his stories and they would require much more faith and confidence in the promptings of the spirit.  This is what we should be working to develop day by day.
