1 Nephi 4:22 "elders"

Nephi puts on Laban's armor after decapitating him.  He sees Zoram along the way and has him fetch the plates for him.  Nephi comments that Zoram talks "many times" about the elders of the Jews.  The references point to other times the Elders of the Jews or Judah are mentioned.  the first reference is of David going back to his father Jesse.  Were the elders just the fathers of the tribes?  Were they religious or political leaders?  Were they both?  Were the righteous or wicked and at what times?

I have always thought of Zoram as kind of a nerd for being one to reference the elders, maybe a little awkward and not good in social situations.  This time I pictured him being fearful of Laban and trying to ease the tension speaking of something that he and Laban had in common -- an association with the Elders.

I love that Nephi says he is taking the plates to his elder brethren out side the city walls and that Zoram just understands that to be the elders of the Jews.  Nephi spoke the truth, regardless of how Zoram understood it.
