Nephi hears more explanations from the Lord -- he slayeth the wicked to bring about his righteous purposes. There are then a number of examples in the scriptures of where the Lord commands his people to destroy the wicked.
As I re-read the first parts of chapter four for some reason I was taken with verses 2 and 3 where I realized that the reason that Nephi shared the example of Moses was not just to show Moses' faith and great works in parting the Red Sea, but also because the Lord drowned the Egyptians. He destroyed the wicked. In verse 3 Nephi says, just like the Egyptians the Lord can deliver us out of Laban's hands and destroy Laban. He was already receiving promptings that some how Laban might need to be destroyed for this good and righteous thing to come about. I think he was just surprised that the Lord would ask him to do it directly.
