The Spirit speaks to Nephi and tells him that the Lord has delivered Laban into his hands and that there are reasons this is right, a) he tried to kill Nephi and his brothers b) he would not hearken to the commandments of God, and c) he had stolen their property. These actions of disobedience against the Lord.
It is interesting the contrast in Nephi's challenge of obedience -- to kil Laban, and Laban's challenge of obedience -- to keep the simple commandments of the Lord. Sadly I think we are all more challenged with keeping the basic commandments of the Lord.
