Nephi is constrained by the spirit to kill Laban who he has found drunk and unconscious before him. He was prompted to withdraw the sword and then given direct guidance to kill him. Saul received similar counsel in 1 Samuel 15. He was to kill everyone and everything in Amalek, yet he was disobedient and did not do it. He lost his standing with the Lord.
I've never thought about it before but we probably wouldn't be reading a story about Nephi if he had truly shrunk from the task of killing Laban.
We must learn to be obedient and not fear what others will think. This is probably the hardest lesson of life. Our fear or apprehension of what others will think of us causes to rationalize our way out of doing the things we know we should do and sometimes even the small ideas that we think don't even matter. President Monson has learned to do both precisely as he ought to.
