I was thinking through what I read in 2 Nephi 9 this morning, and of the many many topics I could have dwelt on I found myself thinking more about the phrase from vs. 39, "Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal." This brought to mind the other verse that has been ocurring to me lately from Mosiah 4:30, "But this much I can tell you that if you do not watch yourselves and your thoughts, and your words and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.
The other favorite verse on this topic is from D&C 121:45, "Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all me and toward the household of faith and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly...." The rest of the verse is great, but I think it's so important to recognize the connection between the heart and the mind. We must have charity and we must have virtue garnishing our thoughts. Virtue will garnish our thoughts when our bowels and hearts are full of charity. Our concern will be for others and not to gratify our pride or our vain ambition.
We are instructed to pray for charity. Moroni 7:45. if we do this we will have bridled our thoughts and directed them to loving God and our fellow man.
