Isaiah 7 - 2 Nephi 17

Isaiah talks about Ephraim and Syria, as the tails of two firebrands (and I don't know what that is or means), that do battle.  We learn about how the people will be, about them having milk and honey that are left in the land.  And sadly none of that means very much to me.  What I do catch that I think is most important is the reference to the Savior, his miraculous conception and birth.  It is to be a sign.  How, I'm not exactly sure.  How does it help to tell a people that a sign will be given them that will happen long after they are dead.
