We read the rest of Alma 50 with the family this morning. It was nice to read the lines that this was a time for the Nephites when they were their happiest since the days of Nephi. They were growing and profitable and had peace. They were keeping the commandments and prospering. I can't help but think that despite the fact that the Lamanites were not attacking Moroni kept his people humble by working them hard as a nation, to keep their cities fortified.
Different purpose, but it reminds me of the work projects used in the 1930's to bolster the economy after the great depression. Work and industry really have great benefit.
At the end of the chapter we read about Morianton. A wicked man who is trying to claim land from the people of Lehi. An angry man who beats one of his servants. She then goes to Moroni and tells them of his plans. Teancum is introduced. He slays Morianton and wins the battle against his rebellious followers.
A principle occurred to me as I read this. I thought about how we hadn't heard of Teancum before now and how he was apart of Moroni's armies. Later we know that Teancum will lead his own detachments. We often see great leaders who have been trained by the other great leaders. I was reminded of how Brigham Young spent lots of time with Joseph Smith and was prepared by him to lead the church. Teancum was probably recognized as someone who had great potential and Moroni kept him near to train him up. Just speculation.
