It's been a while now since I actually read these chapters but there is a common theme through many of these chapters and those that follow. Here are some of the general themes I've seen.
The focus is on the leaders of Judah and Israel. For the most part Israel is corrupt and the focus stays more on Judah. Judah toggles between descendants of David that act righteously and wickedly. To me the saddest of these stories are those that begin righteously and end wickedly.
Those that act wickedly inevitably acting in a way that gets them killed or are spoiled by nearby enemies.
Chapter 12 is about Rehoboam and his wickedness and the Egyptians come and spoil Judah. I can't even imagine how devastated I would be if some other country came and after successful battle desecrated one of our temples.
