Mosiah 17: 1-20 Missionary Work, Types of Christ in Abinadi

  • capewI had a few baptisms on my mission (maybe 50), but I really only know of one that really progressed in the gospel the way one would hope. Was my mission a success or a failure. How many see many baptisms but still think they are a failure because they don't see those people hold on to the gospel after they received it.
  • capewI was struck in this reading by a couple of comments that show a clear parallel pattern, or type of Christ's suffering and death with that of Abinadi. v. 11 Noah was about to release him but didn't because of peer pressure, just as pilate didn't because the people asked for Barabas release. V. 13 Abinadi was scourged with faggots, close to death; just like Jesus was. V. 6 Abinadi was in jail for 3 days, a reminder of our Savior being raised from the dead after 3 days. V. 19 Abinadi says, "O God, receive my soul."; Jesus said, "Into thy hands I commend my soul". As a witness of Jesus Christ, I wonder if in some simple way he rejoiced to see these parallels between the end of his life and ministry and those of the Savior.
The other great message that is more personal than I wish to share on Instagram is the idea that I prayed for ways to remember the Savior and this chapter today was unique in that I saw these parallels between Abinadi and the Savior.  What a great way for my prayer to be answered.
