The cross-references take us to stories shared previously about moments when Laman and Lemuel were angry with Nephi.
1 Nephi 18:13 we read about Laman and Lemuel tying up Nephi on the ship when he warned then about their wicked behavior.
Nephi was tied up that he couldn't move. Laman and Lemuel were murderers in their hearts. I would think they would not have let anyone near him to give him food. Then the storm starts and he at least could have water, a gift from God. Speculation I know but since the thought occurred and I believe in revelation and it reminds me of God's love for His children, I will continue to hold on to the point.
Nephi seems to most frequently have dealt with his brothers anger by teaching from the scriptures. Another cross-reference led us to the story of his building the ship.when his brothers were angry and wouldn't help he reminded then off the story of Moses.he tried to persuade them that the Lord could give power abd direction to do marvelous works.
