Lehi saw many things in his dream as we heard from chapter 8. Nephi sees them again and learns and shares the definitions of these things. I think Lehi understood meaning, but we learn a great lessons in having Nephi seek his own understanding and then share it with us. The mists of darkness are temptations, also referenced elsewhere as fiery darts. These cause men to be blind in their eyes and hardened in their hearts. Because of this they are lead carefully away from the tree. Some seem to make it to the great and spacious building which represents the pride and vain ambitions of the world. Others just end up in the gulf between the tree (and rod of iron) and the great and spacious building.
The gulf is the justice of God. Those that choose wickedness are judged of this justice and the filthy water in this gulf is the hell prepared for them. These things are such a stark contrast to the great joy and peace and comfort enjoyed by those that endure until they reach the tree and partake of the fruit.
