I'll be honest I'm not sure I have ever fully understood how the plates structure shakes out. Here are the three sets of plates that I'm curious about. Plates of Lehi, with all if his history and prophecies. Then there are the plates of Nephi that are also wars and history related. The most important part of course is the small plates of Nephi that contain the writings that are most focused on gospel teachings and Nephi's prophecies.
So I think the plates of Lehi were the ones that were translated and misplaced by Martin Harris. Continuing in my guessing as I can't confirm from the scriptures yet nor from any other reliable source. I believe the small plates of Nephi are what we have from 1 Nephi through Omni. Then the Large plates are from Mosiah to the end. Again I think Mormon and Moroni did much to compile, summarize and organize these writings.
What Nephi says in verse 1 of chapter 6 really catches me off guard. He says he never wrote anything, even including the the war chapters unless it was sacred. That should help us to realize that there are many important principles to be learned throughout his writings. And my guess is that that theme was carried on by all those that took responsibility for the plates.
