This is the second chapter in Matthew that is the Sermon on the Mount. The Lord teaches the people that they should give of their alms or offerings in secret. He wants us to pray in secret. And he wants us to fast in secret. We should be discrete about these things and not seek the recognition of the world. Service to others and our worship can all be internal and personal things. I know this is something I struggle with. All to often I want recognition for the things that I do, and yet the spirit attends when I do worship in private. This is seeking the kingdom of Heaven and that is what the Savior teaches the people to seek first the kingdom of God and that all other things that they need will be added unto them.
