This is one of my favorite chapters because Nephi differentiates the life of those that are happy with the life of those that are not. The difference is work -- to be "industrious" and to "labor with [your] hands". This caused the people to "live after the manner of happiness".
It makes me want to be a better employee and to accomplish more around the house and for our family. The raised crops, herds, flocks, etc to provide for their family. They learned how and prepared to defend themselves in battle. And they even built a temple to continue their worship. Nephi establish something of a government and also organized the church. He was the prophet and "king" of the people. But he was righteous and taught the people correct principles.
In the back of my mind I see and feel that Nephi was so good at receiving revelation that he could be lead through very large projects that would overwhelm the rest of us, such as building a ship, or a temple, learning farming, sword making, organizing a government or a church, and etc. I must follow his example to be the kind of Husband, Father, Son, Brother, employee that I want to be.
