John 19:10 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
The Jews wanted to ensure that they kept their laws and customs and so asked that the legs of the dying men on the cross be broken to speed their death. But to prove that Jesus had power over death, He "gave up the ghost" before they could break His legs thus fulfilling the prophecies that no bone of his body would be broken. I assume that the responsible Roman then pierced His side to confirm Jesus' death thus not needing to break His legs.
