Question of the day: Why is it important not to boast in your own strength?
The Nephites in chapter 3 wanted to 'go up to battle', which means they wanted to advance on the Lamanites in an offensive strategy. Reading chapter four gave some insight into why this is a problem. I see two problems with it. In chapter 3 the Lord says that vengeance is His. So if we go to battle in an offensive position we are seeking vengeance. The Lord only allows for war, battle, and fighting when it is to defend that which the Lord has given us: family, lands, freedom, religion.
The other problem is that a people that go up to battle inevitably see themselves as strong enough to win the war without the help of God. There is in this approach boasting and pride.
The wicked will be punished by the wicked. Mormon 4:5
