The verse speaks of a physical structure that can protect against the heat, the storm and the rain. The cross-references teach us that the Lord is a refuge from the spiritual storms, even the "shafts in the whirlwind" (Helaman 5:12). The Stakes of Zion are also this protection. The storms originate, in some cases, from Satan and his temptations. And I think there are also storms that are just the natural challenges of our mortal probation to try us to see if we will do all things which the Lord God hath commanded us. When we rely on the power of the atonement through Jesus Christ, His power will see us through the challenge.
