2 Nephi 4:2 "Prophecies [and Promises of Joseph]..., there are not many greater"

Prophecies of Joseph of Egypt pertained to all his posterity going forward (just as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob's did before Joseph...and Ephraim and Manasseh). Reading the words of Zenos, which Lehi's people had (Jacob 5), they knew they were the branch broken off that would receive a visit from the Savior.  A branch that would one day be the recipients of great blessings through one who would be called to restore the true gospel to the Earth, allowing their posterity to receive the fullness of the gospel when at the time they wouldn't receive of it.

I have wondered how prophets knew what to ask of God in covenant?  1. By their study they knew what prophets of old had been promised so they knew what God was already willing to promise going forward. 2. By God's power they were shown future generations and knew the inconsistency of men's hearts. 3. And finally we know that those worthy of the spirit will have His influence and promptings to think and say the will of God.  So they do not request that God change his will but they pray to know and desire more fully the blessings God is already willing to give them.

What does the Lord want me to ask of Him? What blessings is He already willing to give me and my family?

Frequently I will read a passage and think, 'I have no thoughts on this'. Inevitably when I start writing I realize I do have questions and thoughts (possible answers to questions) that just come.  These are the promptings of God or direction from the Spirit.  I love the feeling of reading them and recognizing the substance in these thoughts that originally I thought were my own and empty but in reality are not my own and have great value (even if only to me).
