Nephi is remembering that in an earlier revelation he was told that inasmuch as his people kept the commandments of God they would prosper in the land. The opposite is true, as we read it in other passages, if they don't keep the commandments they won't prosper in the land.
A couple of other interesting thing that I learned are that Jesus Christ is the God of this land. And that this promise of prospering in the land was given to the Jaredites long before the Nephites. It still applies to us today as it is our own land being referenced. The promise also continues that part of that prosperity means that we will not e governed by other nations: Omni 1:6, Mosiah 2:22, Ether 2:7-12
