There are themes in this chapter that strike me. The first is that the Amlicites form out of the order of Nehor. That was a seed of dissension that will prove the destruction of so many people. In this first case it is the people that follow Amlici.
The next theme is that they make Amlici a king only a few years after accepting Alma as a chief judge. My guess is that there were some growing pains with the structure of judges and initial judgements passed such that people didn't think it very fair. Then Amlici, already a wicked man, convinces the people that they can get their way quicker if they have a king and don't have to work through the system of judges. Having a king will bring destruction unless that king is holy and pure, and there have been extremely few of those.
Last, we are shown the miracle of praying in this chapter. The warriors unite their voices and hearts in prayer to receive help from the Lord to defeat the Lamanites, and the Lord does hear their prayer and allows them to defeat the Amlicites AND the Lamanites. Their forces must have been many times that of the Nephites.
