"For I will be merciful unto my people, but the wicked shall perish". This chapter describes the destruction of Babylon and is for us a type of the destruction that will occur at the second coming. Isaiah says that the destruction caused by the Medes on Babylon will result in complete destruction just like when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. The image that brings to mind is fire coming down out of heaven and destroying everything.
Some other phrases that come to mind from this dark chapter are about how women and children will not be spared in the destruction. The wicked will watch their children be dashed to pieces in front of their eyes. Could there being anything more disturbing than that?
The question in my mind is how does the Lord do this destruction at the Second Coming. I believe that most of it is something of another World War where the Lord uses the wicked to punish the wicked. And in this format we can see how He could allow one wicked nation to do such awful things to another and allow for complete destruction.
Separate from this destruction imposed by one nation to another is the thought that "men's hearts shall melt". This is a strange phrase to me, but I think that the following verse helps give a little insight into what it might mean. "And they shall be afraid; pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them..." I believe these feelings will be rampant because everyone will see their sins and feel awful before God.
We can repent and keep our garments clean before God. We can know Him and receive his love and protection. We can guide our families and friends to this same peace and protection. We must.
