Nephite Future - 1 Nephi 12

I really appreciate how Nephi learns the meaning of Lehi's dream by seeing the future of his people.

He sees the promised land, and then the visit of the Savior to his people. Then he learns about the structure of how the people will be judged first by the disciples from Jerusalem, then by the 12 from the American continent. I wonder why it was important for him, or us, to learn this.

He also gets to see the righteousness of his people for the next 3 generations. He knows of the righteousness of their souls by the cleanliness of the clothes, and that this cleanliness comes from their faith in Jesus Christ.

Sadly this vision is followed by an understanding of the great and spacious building, the mist of darkness, and the chasm, by seeing his people fall into apostacy.

So the vision is a happy one and a terribly sad one, or at least this portion of it.

2011-01-17: When I wrote the above comments I was thinking of how Nephi would have felt after seeing this vision. I didn't realize how much the sadness outweighed the happiness. Read this: 1 Nephi 15:5 "And it came to pass that I was overcome because of my afflictions, for I considered that my afflictions were great above all, for I had beheld their fall."
