What is spiritual death: Bible Dictionary explains spiritual death as the separation from righteousness. It is also known as 'hell'.
The atonement makes it possible to overcome both deaths. The resurrection overcomes the physical death and repentance allows us to come back to presence of the Lord and not suffer the 'second death' that must come upon those who willfully rebel against God.
2. The Lord suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the Cross to pay the price that justice requires for sin. This allows us to overcome spiritual death.
The Savior held the keys over death and resurrection and allowed himself to die and be resurrected. Once done it became possible for all men to follow him and have the same opportunity
2 Nephi 9:5 - the great Creator ...suffereth himself to become subject to man in the flesh, and die for all men, that all men might become subject unto him.
2 Nephi 9:6 - the fall came by transgression and brings about the fall and death and the need for the resurrection.

2 Nephi 9:12 - spiritual death is hell and both death and hell must deliver up their captivie dead so that they can be restored one to another. and be judged.
