This entry will have to be a series of random thoughts. Which fits with what I'm experiencing as I read through 1 Chronicles. I never knew this before, not having ever read the Old Testament cover to cover, but Chronicles appears to be solely a genealogy from Adam on down. There are some descriptions of armed forces, and levites and descendants of Aaron that work in the Temple, and other staff like people of the major leaders - like Saul and David. So lots of lists. Lots of lines like [weird name] son of [weird name].
I've thought lots of times that maybe I should come back and read Chronicles before choosing a name for my next child.
More seriously, I do think that this does represent a work that was important to them and that is important to us. Family history is more than just being able to draw a family tree. Knowing the temple ordinances reminds us that we want to have children that are faithful in the gospel, and hold worthily the Melchizedek priesthood. As we read through the names listed in Chronicles I recognized many of the names as those who lead Judah or Israel in wickedness. But we also know that the missionary work continues on the other side and we can be hopeful that they have accepted the gospel at some point in the last few thousand years. Thus, hopefully these lists are chains of faithful priesthood holders.
Just thoughts that have occurred as I have read.
